St. Rita of Cascia was a 15th-century Italian saint known for her unwavering faith, forgiveness, and devotion in the face of immense personal suffering.
Brief History
Born: Margherita Lotti in 1381, Roccaporena, near Cascia, Italy
Early Life: Raised by devout parents known as peacemakers. She desired a religious life but was married at age 12 to Paolo Mancini, a volatile nobleman
Marriage & Family: Endured an abusive marriage for 18 years and had two sons. After her husband was murdered, she struggled to prevent her sons from seeking revenge
Tragedy & Transformation: Both sons died young, leaving her a childless widow. She then pursued her original calling and joined the Augustinian convent in Cascia at age 36
Spiritual Life: Lived a life of prayer and contemplation. She became known for her mystical experiences, including a forehead wound believed to be a partial stigmata
Death: Passed away on May 22, 1457. Canonized in 1900 by Pope Leo XIII
