October 13th is a very important date in Catholic history marked by two extraordinary events that speak to divine intervention and spiritual warfare: the Miracle of the Sun at Fátima in 1917, and Pope Leo XIII’s mystical vision in 1884 that led to the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. Though separated by decades, both moments converge in their urgency – a call to conversion, vigilance, and trust in heavenly protection.
The Miracle of the Sun
On October 13, 1917, tens of thousands gathered in Cova da Iria, Portugal, responding to a promise made by Our Lady of Fátima to three shepherd children – Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta. Despite pouring rain, the crowd witnessed something extraordinary:
- The sun appeared to spin, change colors, and plunge toward the Earth before returning to its place.
- Eyewitnesses included believers and skeptics alike – journalists, scientists, and government officials.
- The phenomenon lasted about 10 minutes, and afterward, the soaked crowd and muddy ground were inexplicably dry.
This miracle was not merely a spectacle – it was a divine confirmation of Our Lady’s message: a call to prayer, penance, and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It occurred during a time of global upheaval, just as World War I raged and atheistic ideologies gained ground.
The Vision of Pope Leo XIII
Exactly 33 years earlier, on October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a chilling mystical experience after celebrating Mass.
According to witnesses and later accounts:
- The Pope stood motionless for several minutes, pale and visibly shaken.
- He later described hearing a conversation between Jesus and Satan near the tabernacle.
- Satan boasted he could destroy the Church if given 75–100 years of greater power.
- Christ, in a manner reminiscent of Job 1, permitted the trial.
In response, Pope Leo XIII composed the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel, invoking the heavenly warrior to defend the faithful against the forces of darkness. The prayer was mandated to be said after every Low Mass until the 1960s and remains a powerful devotional tool today.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
A Shared Message of Urgency and Hope
Though different in form – one visual, one auditory – both events share a profound spiritual resonance:
- They warn of spiritual conflict, reminding the faithful that evil is real and active.
- They call for protection and intercession, through Mary and the Archangels.
- They affirm divine presence, even amid global turmoil and moral decay.
In a world still wrestling with confusion and division, October 13th invites us to remember that heaven is not silent. Whether through the blazing sun or a whispered vision, God continues to speak – calling us to prayer, vigilance, and trust.
